The first-line treatment for asthma has traditionally been salbutamol (Ventolin®) administered via aerosol inhalers or a nebulising pump, or terbutaline (Bricanyl®) in tablet form or the new 'turbohaler'® format. Theophylline tablets (Nuelin® and Theodur®) may be used daily for more severe cases. Overdosage of theophylline requires urgent assessment due to the risk of cardiac problems. For asthma prevention and for the more severe cases, steroids are inhaled in the form of beclomethasone diproprionate (Becotide®, Aldecin® and Becloforte®) and budesonide (Pulmicort®). In very severe cases steroids are given in tablet form (for example prednisolone). Intal® (sodium chromoglycate) is also used for prevention. Intal® has minimal side effects.
